A contract for Baht 4 billion ($111.4 million) was signed by Northern Bangkok Monorail (NBM) and Bangkok Land to build a 3 km branch line on the MRT Pink Line to the Muang Thong Thani complex.
Muang Thong Thani and Muang Thong Thani Lake will each have a station on the monorail line. Another Baht 1.2 billion will be spent by Bangkok Land on a skywalk to the Impact Exhibition and Convention Center.
NBM is a division of the BSR JV Consortium, a partnership comprising Ratch Group, an independent power producer, Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, and Bangkok Mass Transit System Group.
According to Mr. Peter Kanjanapas, chairman of Bangkok Land, the project will offer a convenient mode of transportation for the 10 million visitors and participants who attend the district's exhibitions and conferences each year in addition to the more than 300,000 residents and workers who live and work in Muang Thong Thani.
According to Kanjanapas, the branch line will reduce Chaeng Watthana Road's traffic congestion.
The 34.5km MRT Pink Line, currently under construction, is an elevated monorail line that will travel through the northern part of the city, beginning at the Nonthaburi Civic Center in Pak Kret District Nonthaburi, and ending at Minburi District in east Bangkok. It will follow the main east-west transportation corridor of Chaeng Wattana and Ram Intra roads. 30 stations will be along the railway. According to Kavin Kanjanapas, executive director of NBM, this section of the line will open in 2023.
